KNICKERS!

by Sarah Quick

January 20th, 2025    6:30pm

The paper mill that long propped up the economy of Elliston Falls, Canada has been shut down, sending the town spiraling into an economic depression. When a chipper but overwhelmed tourism officer arrives to lend a hand, she discovers an unlikely business partnership in the three brassy friends that make up the local chapter of Weight Watchers. Could the ladies' plan for a custom underwear business (complete with giant knickers as a roadside attraction) really be the town's salvation? This hilariously irreverent and “revealing” comedy celebrates determination & the entrepreneurial spirit.

AUDITIONS!!!

Southern Fried Funeral!!!

Saturday, February 8 from 10:00 AM - Noon

Sunday, February 9 from 5:30 PM - 7:30

Show goes up May 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, and 2 shows on the 10th to avoid Mother's Day.

Dewey Frye is dead and the rest of his family is left to pick up the pieces -- that is if they don't kill each other first. Not only does matriarch Dorothy have to contend with sudden widowhood, but she's also faced with church-committee harpy Ozella Meeks sticking her nose in the family business, Dewey's snake-in-the-grass brother making a grab for her house, and two grown daughters reliving their childhood rivalry. Funerals bring out the worst, the best, and the funniest in people, and the Fryes are no exception. A big-hearted comedy about family -- Southern-style.

It’s a fable as old as time – Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, and promptly falls in love. As in such stories, the gods and goddesses who preside over the island meddle with Ti Moune and make a bet with one another over which is stronger – love or death. She bargains with the Gods for his life, but to do so she must make the ultimate sacrifice. Told with Caribbean rhythms and instruments, this Tony Award–winning musical is a testament that a beautiful story simply told has the power to inspire all.

The Pajama Game was awarded the 1955 Tony for Best Musical and, over half of a century later, claimed the award for Best Revival of a Musical, proving that the story is truly timeless. With an energetic score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross (Damn Yankees), The Pajama Game is brimming with songs and dances that have become musical theatre standards, including "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway”- marking Bob Fosse’s choreography debut!

Conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory are anything but peaceful as sparks fly between new superintendent, Sid Sorokin, and Babe Williams, leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7 ½ cent pay increase, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well.

FUNDAMENTALS OF MOVEMENT is a course that explores a range of actor movement techniques, including Suzuki, Laban, and Viewpoints. These methodologies are designed to help actors cultivate physical awareness and develop a skilled, expressive use of the body. Students will begin to identify their habitual movement patterns and learn how to move beyond them, embracing a state of transformation. The course will also investigate the connection between the external physicality and the internal emotional, imaginative life of the actor. This exploration will allow students to harness their physical instrument to access a rich inner world.

6-Week Course starting 1/21

TUESDAYS | 7-10 PM

CONTACT! 2.0 builds on the concepts introduced in CONTACT! Students will continue to use the power of the body and the language of touch to create dynamic performances, this time applying the work to scenes from playwrights such as Alice Birch, Will Eno, Tennessee Williams, Georg Büchner, Federico García Lorca, Sam Shepard, and María Irene Fornés. Additionally, class practitioners will learn how to use the compositional tools found in CONTACT! to self-direct these scenes with additional guidance from Vernal & Sere’s guest instructor Sawyer Estes. We’ll continue to explore elements of contact improvisation and find more comfort in being present with others and the self to embrace empowered vulnerability and specific embodied choices in storytelling. CONTACT! will help you play, create, and find freedom in your choices and instrument.

This class is designed for people with experience in acting and moving.

Voice Lesson with Isa Martinez

Private Lessons: 30min to 1hr sessions now available!

Group Lessons: Information coming soon!

In both Group Voice and Private Voice lessons students will learn vocal technique. We will cover skills such as proper breath support, diction, healthy resonance, phrasing, and performance. Both options are great for singers who are looking to create a foundation of healthy vocal technique.

In Group Voice we’ll be working in a small group (4-10 students) for 8 weeks. Each week we will explore a new topic within vocal technique, and students will be asked to sing in groups, and individually. This is a great option for beginner singers who would like to explore new singing techniques in the comfort of a group setting.

In Private Voice Lessons, students have the option to take 30 minute or 1 hour lessons. Here I will work one on one to help the singer reach their personal goals. Whether it is to extend their range, find new repertoire, continue to establish good vocal technique, or prepare for an audition. Voice lessons can be scheduled weekly, and there is more flexibility in scheduling. Voice students will have the opportunity to perform in a Spring Recital.

Submission Opportunities:

  1. Atlanta Dramatists is  is accepting winter holiday-themed short scripts and excerpts now for our Zoom short reading series on Sunday, February 2 at 7pm EST. In order to ensure a proper casting, we will need your 15-page (or less) samples and cast breakdown by Sunday, January 26. Please note that we are only accepting new scripts from dues-paying members at this time (if you have already submitted a script and received confirmation with a reading date, you will be grandfathered in). If you are a dues-paying member and would like to participate, please email the script and cast breakdown to atlantadramatists@gmail.com with the subject "Atlanta Dramatists - Sunday Meeting". We will accept the first 6 plays. Any more than 6 will be moved to the following session.

    • Samples must be 15 minutes or less. Can be a stand-alone play or a sample from a larger play.

    • Please complete the cast breakdown by clicking this link, downloading this form, updating the info, and then attaching this form to the email.

    • We need to send scripts to the actors in advance, so they can review them. Therefore, we will need the scripts to be sent with the cast breakdown.

    • The Zoom link is: https://gmc-edu.zoom.us/j/86485893763?pwd=K2JYQ0VseTJuMUIvUDdwRklWQmM1Zz09 // Meeting ID: 864 8589 3763 // Passcode: 123456

  2. Atlanta Dramatists is seeking scripts to include in a weekly workshop series with the Senior University of Greater Atlanta (SUGA) this Fall. We will be performing cold readings of scripts on either Tuesday or Thursday mornings from March through May. Guidelines:

    • Each session will be one hour long. Therefore, scripts should be less than an hour OR we can consider a two-act play where each act is less than an hour and we read them across two sessions. You may also combine several short plays up to 45 minutes.

    • There will be a talk-back after each reading, so the one-hour session includes the script and the talk-back.

    • SUGA is made up an all-senior audience, so script content should be something that would appeal to senior citizens. That does not mean it has to about senior citizens. It just means that your two-hour fanfic about Chappell Roan may not be the best received by this crowd. Also, some adult content is fine, but extreme language, violence and sexuality may not be well appreciated by this crowd.

    • We typically get 50-60 audience members at each reading, so it's a pretty decent crowd with lively feedback.

    • The performances will be on Zoom from 9:30am-10:30am EST on either Tuesdays or Thursdays from March through May. Playwrights are asked to attend, so if this time is not good for you, please consider allowing someone else the opportunity.

    • Preference will be given to Atlanta Dramatists' dues-paying members (see the Membership Announcement below for details), but non-members may submit. If we don't get enough member scripts, we will consider non-member scripts.

    • This is a volunteer opportunity only. Atlanta Dramatists is donating their time and energy to these workshops and are asking playwrights to donate their scripts as well. No money is involved whatsoever. Because it is a cold reading, no rights are given up either. It is just a cold reading over Zoom in an educational environment.

    • If you have had a piece read with SUGA before, please do not submit the same script. It will be mostly the same audience as last time.

    • We are seeking actors for this series as well. Casting will be conducted based on the needs of the scripts and on the actors' availability.

    • Playwrights and actors, please email your scripts and/or headshots to atlantadramatists@gmail.com with the heading "SUGA".

  3. Atlanta Dramatists is accepting scripts for the upcoming Diversity Festival:

    • Diversity of Voices: The festival seeks plays that reflect diverse perspectives, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, and socio-economic background. Playwrights from underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged to submit.

    • Original Work: Submissions must be original plays that have not been previously published or produced. Adaptations and new interpretations of existing works will be considered if they provide a unique perspective.

    • Length: Plays must have a performance time between one and thirty minutes. Works exceeding thirty minutes will not be considered.

    • Theme and Content: Submissions should explore any area of diversity and engage with themes of inclusion and social justice. We want to care about your characters and keep us on the edge of our seats!

    • Content Rating: The work must have a rating of PG-13 or lower. Content should be appropriate for a broad audience while still engaging with meaningful themes.

    • Attendance Requirement: Playwrights must attend at least one of the workshops offered on Saturdays at 11 AM to participate in the festival. (We have videos of the workshops for those who wish to participate but could not find time in their schedule).

    • Format: Submissions must adhere to standard playwriting guidelines, including:

      • 12-point font, double-spaced, with a title page that includes contact information.

      • Submission Fee: Free for dues-paying members of Atlanta Dramatists. Non-members are asked to pay $10 to cover administrative costs. This fee can be waived for playwrights facing financial hardship; please inquire for details.

      • Deadline: All submissions must be received by the specified deadline (January 31). Late submissions will not be considered.

      • Response Time: Playwrights can expect to receive feedback or a decision within six to eight weeks after the submission deadline).

      • Production Requirements: Submissions should include a brief description of any specific production requirements or limitations (e.g., number of actors, set design, etc.).

      • Supplemental Materials: Playwrights may be asked to include a character breakdown, synopsis, and a brief author bio highlighting their experience and connection to the themes of the festival.

      • Please email atlantadramatists@gmail.com with the subject heading: "Diversity Festival Play Submission"

  4. Atlanta Dramatists is accepting full-length plays for our 4th Monday Full-Length Play Reading Series #4MFLPRS. Please note that we are only accepting new scripts from dues-paying members at this time (if you have already submitted a script and received confirmation with a reading date, you will be grandfathered in). If you are a dues-paying member and would like to participate, please email it to atlantadramatists@gmail.com.

Casting Opportunities

  1. Morehouse School of Medicine is casting now for Standardized Patients. This is a pretty well-paid gig wherein you essentially act like medical patients while the medical students try to figure out how to diagnose you. You usually get a clear outline of the character with some scripted dialogue, but much of it is improv, based on the character outline. It's a lot of fun, and several of our members work there. Membership Announcement:

On September 19, 2024, Atlanta Dramatists celebrated our one-year anniversary. In that time, we've achieved some significant milestones:

  • Created an amazing Board of Directors, made up of 9 incredible artists and humanitarians, as well as an Advisory Board with 12 other amazing artists and humanitarians.

  • Successfully partnered with Academy Theatre and Senior University of Greater Atlanta (SUGA) on several ventures, and laid the groundwork with numerous other organizations for potential future partnerships.

  • Fully cast and held cold readings of 16 full-length stage plays and screenplays live and over Zoom.

  • Fully cast and held cold readings of nearly 70 short plays and excerpts of longer plays live and over Zoom.

  • Full cast and staged 2 fully rehearsed readings of original musicals.

  • Successfully held 2 workshops with a guest artist (on Stage Combat and Stage Intimacy), and laid the groundwork for countless others.

  • Held a garden party and poetry reading at our Vice President Carol Welter's home.

  • Fully incorporated as a non-profit organization in the state of Georgia.

  • Met with Georgia Lawyers for the Arts and have begun the process of filing for a 501(c)3 designation.

  • Built up a website, a Facebook page, and an Instagram page.

Excerpt for the workshops and the two fully rehearsed readings, all of the above events have been entirely free and have incorporated volunteer talent. While our Board of Directors intends to remain volunteer-based, we do feel it's important that we begin to pay and recognize our actors and other talent who help make our readings and events so special. To that end, we have decided to shift from a free membership to a paid membership model. What does this entail?

  • $20 membership fee for the entire year (if you pay now, you will be covered for the remainder of 2024 and all of 2025)

  • Dues-paying members will receive discounts (and sometimes even free admission) to all of our workshops and readings for the year.

  • Only dues-paying members will be eligible to have their scripts read in our First Sundays reading series, our Fourth Monday reading series, and our Fully-Rehearsed Play Reading series. Please note that if you have already submitted a script and have received confirmation with a reading date, then you will be grandfathered in for that reading, but if you wish to submit future scripts (including short excerpts), you will need to become a dues-paying member.

  • These fees will allow us to begin paying our actors who participate in these events a small stipend, as well as allow us to file necessary paperwork, hire directors and dramaturgs for fully-rehearsed readings, pay the venues (including Academy Theatre), and meet other necessary financial goals.

  • $20 membership fee may be paid through Venmo at @atlantadramatists, through Zelle at atlantadramatists@gmail.com, or by cash or check made out to Atlanta Dramatists at one of our official events.

  • Audience members are welcome to attend our cold readings for free on Zoom or live, though a small fee may be requested for attendees of our fully rehearsed readings, workshops, and potential full productions. Dues-paying members will always receive a discount (and possibly even free admission) to any of our events that require an admission fee. The discount amount may vary based on the scope of the event.

  • To fill our membership form, please click here: Contact Information - Google Forms

  • If you have any questions or concerns about this update, please email us at atlantadramatists@gmail.com
