Auditions 12/8 & 12/9, 2025

The SpongeBob Musical is incredibly fun and family-friendly, its timeless story of identity, crisis, and community is also a witty allegory that examines and critiques the politics of the modern era, and it does so in such a way where children will appreciate and understand the plot line, while adults can read between the lines and extract even more from the musical’s message.

SpongeBob SquarePants features an eclectic score of music, each song having been written by a different musical artist with the purposes of recreating the type of musical hodgepodge exhibited by the original television series.

Auditions for Almost, Maine

by John Cariani

Monday, December 9, 2025, 6-9 PM.

Tuesday, December 10, 2025, 6-9 PM.

Callbacks: Saturday December 13, 2025 at 10AM-2PM

APC Theater, 180 Academy St., Alpharetta, GA 30024

Welcome to Almost, Maine, a place that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States. It’s almost in Canada. And it’s not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it almost doesn’t exist. One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

“ALMOST, MAINE is a series of nine amiably absurdist vignettes about love, with a touch of good-natured magic realism…witty, romantic, unsentimental. A beautifully structured play, with nifty surprise endings (most but not all of them happy).” —The New York Times.

“Sweet, poignant, and witty. Nearly perfect. ALMOST, MAINE’s charm is real. [It] packs wit, earns its laughs and, like love, surprises you.” —New York Daily News.

After history professor John Oldman unexpectedly resigns from the University, his startled colleagues impulsively invite themselves to his home, pressing him for an explanation.  But they’re shocked to hear his reason for premature retirement; John claims he must move on because he is immortal, and cannot stay in one place for more than 10 years without his secret being discovered. Tempers rise and emotions flow as John’s fellow professors attempt to poke holes in his story, but it soon becomes clear that his tale is as impossible to disprove as it is to verify.  What starts out as a friendly gathering soon builds to an unexpected and shattering climax.

Submission Opportunities:

  1. Atlanta Dramatists is seeking short plays for our first ever fully staged production titled: The Solidarity Project: a Celebration of Historical Nonviolent Resistance. We seek play scripts ranging from 10 minutes to 30 minutes which illustrate nonviolent resistance throughout history and all over the world. For the purposes of this project, scripts should be inspired by events that occurred prior to 2015. The focus of this festival is history, and the overall themes will be hope and empowerment. Scripts may be historically accurate, historical fiction, historical fantasy, etc. provided they are inspired by actual events.

    • Note: The resistance depicted must be non-violent, but the play may contain violence in other aspects, such as if there were a violent reaction to a non-violent protest. Atlanta Dramatists is open to the use of music, puppetry, and dance as well as traditional “straight plays.” No projections or elaborate sets; this is a festival of plays that will all share the same set, though chairs, benches, blocks, and tables may be added or removed between pieces.

    • Each script may utilize up to 5 actors. Unless ethnic specificity is vital to the plot, please allow for flexible yet diverse casting.

    • Playwrights will receive royalties for the scripts selected. Performances will be at The Academy Theatre in Hapeville, GA, in 2026 (There is a chance the show will tour to other venues, as well).

    • Playwrights will receive 2 comp tickets.

    • Playwrights may submit up to two scripts each.

    • Submission deadline: December 31, 2025.

    • To submit, go to: this form.  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSepPQphW0srgY4TuaxLqCKOqGCcdALcjXhzryktBTUPEZ8CRw/viewform?usp=header

  2. Atlanta Dramatists is accepting Halloween-themed short scripts and excerpts now for our Zoom short reading series on Sunday, December 7 at 7pm EST. In order to ensure a proper casting, we will need your 15-page (or less) samples and cast breakdown by Sunday, November 30. Please note that we are only accepting new scripts from dues-paying members at this time. If you are a dues-paying member and would like to participate, please email the script and cast breakdown to atlantadramatists@gmail.com with the subject "Atlanta Dramatists - Sunday Meeting". We will accept the first 6 plays. Any more than 6 will be moved to the following session.

  3. Atlanta Dramatists is partnering with SUGA (Senior University of Greater Atlanta) for another season of Zoom readings. Therefore, we are seeking scripts! These readings typically occur in the mornings, usually on a Tuesday or Thursday from 9:30am-10:30am. The sessions will run from March through May. Details:

    • We will be meeting with SUGA once a week for one hour max each week. Therefore, scripts must either be one-acts under one hour OR we could read a full-length play on two separate days, so long as each act of the play is under one hour. Alternately, we could read several short plays in one session, so long as the total run-time is under one hour.

    • Students at this university are all senior citizens. They are adults and there are no real content limitations. However, these students tend to appreciate romantic comedies and murder mysteries more than any other style of theatre. Still, if you have something you think they'd enjoy, please feel free to send it.

    • This is an entirely volunteer event. Atlanta Dramatists is making no money from this event, and will not be able to pay any money. We are doing this solely for the fun of it, and to give back to this community.

    • Playwrights are asked to attend the readings to the best of their ability. It will take place over Zoom, but it will be in the mornings. The readings will be recorded if the playwright cannot attend.

    • Please do not submit the same work that we've read before. Most of these students will be returners from the previous two years.

    • Please email scripts to atlantadramatists@gmail.com with the subject SUGA.

  4. The Becoming Arts Collective in Pittsburgh is seeking 10-minute plays for an upcoming festival. When I asked for more details, such as theme or topic, they said they are "especially fans of uplifting endings." If you have something for them, please submit your work to Barbara Burgess-Lefebvre at Barbaraannlefebvre@gmail.com.

  5. Atlanta Dramatists is accepting full-length plays for our 4th Monday Full-Length Play Reading Series #4MFLPRS. Please note that we are only accepting new scripts from dues-paying members at this time (if you have already submitted a script and received confirmation with a reading date, you will be grandfathered in). If you are a dues-paying member and would like to participate, please email it to atlantadramatists@gmail.com.

Swag Shop:

eBay sales:

  • Atlanta Dramatists is selling items on eBay to raise funds. If you're looking for some great collectibles, and want to help us out as well, please consider buying something from our eBay store: https://www.ebay.com/usr/atlantadramatistsinc.

Donations:

  • Atlanta Dramatists has officially been approved for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status! That means we can now apply for grants, and provide tax receipts for donations. If you are looking for an organization to support, please consider Atlanta Dramatists!

Miscellaneous:

  • Atlanta Dramatists is seeking a new Treasurer, as our beloved Treasurer Leonard will be stepping down at the end of this year. If you are interested in being a Treasurer with us, please send a resume and statement of interest to atlantadramatists@gmail.com.

  • Atlanta Dramatists is seeking directors and script readers for our upcoming Solidarity Project. This will be a full production of several short plays and we need someone to help read and select scripts, and someone to help direct one or more short plays for the event, which will take place in March and April of 2026. If you are interested, please email us at atlantadramatists@gmail.com with a statement of your interest.

Membership Announcement:

  1. Atlanta Dramatists are seeking paid members. What does this entail?

  • $20 membership fee for the entire year.

  • Dues-paying members will receive discounts (and sometimes even free admission) to all of our workshops and readings for the year.

  • Only dues-paying members will be eligible to have their scripts read in our First Sundays reading series, our Fourth Monday reading series, and our Fully-Rehearsed Play Reading series. Please note that if you have already submitted a script and have received confirmation with a reading date, then you will be grandfathered in for that reading, but if you wish to submit future scripts (including short excerpts), you will need to become a dues-paying member.

  • These fees will allow us to begin paying our actors who participate in these events a small stipend, as well as allow us to file necessary paperwork, hire directors and dramaturgs for fully-rehearsed readings, pay the venues (including Academy Theatre), and meet other necessary financial goals.

  • $20 membership fee may be paid through: Donations – Atlanta Dramatists. Just please clarify in the comments that this is for a membership, not a donation.

  • Audience members are welcome to attend our cold readings for free on Zoom or live, though a small fee may be requested for attendees of our fully rehearsed readings, workshops, and potential full productions. The discount amount may vary based on the scope of the event.
